Atlético de Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher took merely 27 seconds to score the third-fastest knockout-phase goal in UEFA Champions League history against Real Madrid C.F. in March.
It trails only Dejan Stankovic’s 24-second volley for FC Internazionale Milano against Schalke in 2011, and Roy Makaay’s 10-second effort for FC Bayern München against Real in 2007. The Dutchman’s is the competition’s quickest-ever goal.
Gallagher’s goal was the fastest of all time by an Englishman in the Champions League, and made him the first player of his nationality to score in the Madrid Derby. Laurie Cunningham, Steve McManaman, David Beckham, Michael Owen, Kieran Trippier and Jude Bellingham had all failed to do so.
Atlético will play Paris Saint-Germain in Los Angeles in one of the most mouth-watering matches of the FIFA Club World Cup’s group phase. Diego Simeone’s Colchoneros will then take on Seattle Sounders FC in Seattle, before returning to LA to battle Botafogo. Gallagher could face his former employers Chelsea FC in the quarter-finals.
