Angel Di Maria has announced he will retire from international duty following the Copa America 2024.
“I will leave the Argentina national team after the Copa America,” he told Urbana Play 104.3 on Tuesday. ”It’s over for me, it will be the last tournament. I want to play in the next Copa America, and I’m doing everything possible to be my best for my club and every time I play for Argentina.”
The 35-year-old, who rejoined Benfica in July after 13 years away, has enjoyed a trophy-laden career with La Albiceleste. He lifted the FIFA U-20 World Cup™ in 2007 before taking home gold – alongside Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero – from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
In 2021, Di Maria scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Brazil in the Copa America final, ending Argentina’s 28-year wait for a major title and breaking a streak of four consecutive defeats in the competition’s decider.
Di Maria’s crowning glory undoubtedly came in December 2022, when he netted in the thrilling win over France that secured Argentina a first FIFA World Cup™ crown since 1986.
In total, Di Maria has netted 29 goals in 134 caps for Argentina.
