Paulinho discusses his first senior Brazil call-up, facing Lionel Messi and Argentina and his FIFA World Cup dream.

As her husband popped out to the registry office, Ana Cristina called family and friends to tell them she’d given birth to her first son, Paulo Henrique. Her euphoria turned to horror when she saw the birth certificate. “Are you crazy?” she screamed at her husband, who’d named him Romario after the Flamengo icon.

Ana Cristina, a diehard Vascaína, was hellbent on revenge. When her second son was born – six months after ‘The Animal’ scored the greatest goal in FIFA Club World Cup™ history, for Vasco da Gama against Manchester United – she insisted he would be called Edmundo. Her partner conceded. Or at least he pretended to. When he got back from the registry office, she was livid – again – to discover her newborn had been named Paulo Henrique Junior.

The kid – at least in Vila da Penha, where he grew up – was nevertheless known as Edmundo. And like the friends-turned-enemies, the brothers played for rival futsal teams: Romario for Mello and Paulo Henrique for Vasco da Gama. When they collided in a final, it was even billed in a local newspaper as Romario versus Edmundo!
