We continue our countdown to Saudi Arabia 2023 by recalling how Rogerio Ceni inspired Sao Paulo to an upset of Liverpool in the 2005 final.

To mark the 20th FIFA Club World Cup™, FIFA is counting down to its kick-off by showcasing 20 of the greatest moments in the tournament’s history.

Saudi Arabia 2023 is just 13 days away.
Everyone knew of Rogerio Ceni heading into the second FIFA Club World Cup™ in 2005. He was the bouncer paid to protect nets who instead acted as burglar, damaging them with alarming regularity. He was the man careering down Jose Luis Chilavert’s world record for goals by a goalkeeper.

It’s didn’t take long for a Rogerio speciality. The Pato Branco native scored the winner from the spot – it was, astonishingly, his 21st of the calendar year – as Sao Paulo edged Al Ittihad in the semi-finals.

Then came Liverpool. Rafa Benitez’s squad did extensive work in training on not giving away free-kicks around the box, wary of Rogerio’s deadliness in these positions.
