By any measure, Marcel Witeczek can look back on a glittering football career. Now 55, his list of honours includes two German championships and the UEFA Cup with Bayern Munich as well as the German Supercup with 1. FC Kaiserslautern, to name but a few.
He played a total of 410 Bundesliga matches for Bayer Uerdingen, Kaiserslautern, Bayern and Borussia Moenchengladbach as well as 87 appearances in national and international cup competitions.
Polish-born Witeczek showed his potential on the international stage right away, winning the adidas Golden Boot at both the FIFA U-16 World Championship (now the FIFA U-17 World Cup) in 1985 and the FIFA World Youth Championship (now FIFA U-20 World Cup) in 1987, helping Germany to runners-up spot on both occasions.
He has been sharing his memories of the 1985 tournament with FIFA and explaining why, despite scoring goals for fun, he was never called up to Germany’s senior team.
